A Taste of Turnbuckle: Sweeter than Whine!
Two beefy studs cap off Heelbash 2 with a match in the classic strongman style of professional wrestling. This is Kelly King's fifth time in the BG East ring, and from the start he eyes his own cousin Joey King distrustfully, warning his 'distant' relative with a chilly and unwelcoming reception. "My ring," Kelly proclaims, verbally drawing a line in the sand. Kelly's bravado has no effect on Joey, whose manner suggests he's game for a good tussle and a paycheck, nothing more. Both men exude more aplomb than the squared circle can easily hold, so there's a clear foreboding of the headbutting to come. They lock fingers in a test of strength, so perfectly matched in build and bullheadedness that, for a few seconds, they are immobilized as muscle braces against muscle. Then Joey forces Kelly down to one knee, smugly countering, "This WAS your ring."
Oops! Joey done said the wrong thing. Kelly suckers Joey into drawing up close enough to get a mouthful of bitch-slap, which he follows with some seriously nasty business, choking the new recruit against the middle rope and then stomping down on the guy's ankles and shoulder. "How does that turnbuckle taste?" Kelly inquires derisively. He motions Joey in for more, saying, "C'mon, strongman!" Too confident, too soon! Joey comes on plenty strong with a stiff left jab to Kelly's midsection and follows up with a full suite of assaults. All of a sudden, Joey looks ready to sign the papers on this wrestling ring and bounce Kelly out on his ass. Joey's shoulder rams Kelly's body against the corner ropes, eventually locking one arm between his thighs while clutching Kelly by the chin. For four solid minutes, the cocky rookie controls the veteran with armlocks, heel stomps, and grueling corner work.
The stunning balance between these equals has a doppelganger effect. For whole minutes, it's difficult to distinguish one cousin from the other. They trade punches and low blows, the pace accelerating as gradually Kelly's edge in experience and ring savvy begins to bend the balance in the vet's favor. A tight Boston crab forces Joey to frantically tap out, the match's long-awaited first submission. Capitalizing on his victory, Kelly tries for a quick second with the same hold. Joey grasps for the ropes, but Kelly drags him back, stomping down on the man's ankles. The move leads to some hot horizontal grappling as the positions of power and dominance again shift from one to the other. At one point, Joey chokes Kelly out. To make it official, he lifts Kelly's arm and lets it drop limply to the mat. He repeats the test. But on the third try, Kelly's hand stays up, quashing Joey's dream of a perfect kayo finish ... for the time being, at least.
This match supplies some of the finest punishing boot stomps we've seen in a long while, increasingly to Kelly's advantage. Staggered, Joey pleads for a timeout. In just half a heartbeat, Kelly mule-kicks the guy's balls, quipping, "THERE's your timeout!" After Kelly gains his second tap-out by crab hold, Joey is reluctant to continue the fight. But Kelly's just catching his second wind. He promises a fair fight if Joey sticks it out. Joey lunges, fist flying, and Kelly ducks under the arc of the swing and heaves Joey up in a bearhug. So great is the pressure Kelly puts on Joey's spine that the new heel hire taps out a third time. Kelly dismissively drops his cousin on his face and then stomps the guy's head! It will take a miracle for Joey to regain his bearings and press on further. Yet from the very start, this fight is a race between two never-say-die hell-raisers to see who dismantles whom first. The action rises to a fever pitch till the unforgettable climax, when one of these bruisers wipes the slate clean with a Texas-style stone-cold stunner! Not to be missed! Never to be forgotten!
