The Human Wrecking Ball
"I feel bad for my next challenger," says burly Buck 'Wildcard' Carter as he flexes biceps in front of the mirror. Guys like Buck, with wrecking-ball physiques and chips on their shoulders, are exactly what BG East's Big 'n' Beefy series has been about from the start. Body slams for these guys are seismic events. We don't see as much flipping and flying from them (though hold on tight to something when we do), but watching them compete is like watching two Mack trucks charging full-throttle into each other. It makes the heart skip a beat.
Toney Rico warily enters the ring with Buck. He packs lots of beef as well, weighing in at over 200 pounds and standing over six feet tall. Most recently, he stunned fans as main event material, facing Ty Alexander in Ty's Wrestler Spotlight. But as big and sturdy as Toney is, facing a gorilla like Buck calls for caution, if not trepidation. Right off, he makes a mistake by blocking Carter's reflection in the mirror. "Who are you, the Jolly Green Giant?" Buck 'Wildcard' gripes, referring to Toney's stature and green trunks. In an effort to make peace, Toney extends his hand in a show of good sportsmanship. Buck slams him to the mat with an over-the-shoulder arm drag.
"That's how I do it," Carter exclaims after whipping Rico off the ropes and clotheslining him to the mat. "Who gets in the way of the mirror when I'm posing?!?" He hikes Toney's leg up so the knee is almost touching Toney's nose. Toney whimpers submissively, but Buck is not done with him. "Let me teach you a little wrestling." Lesson One is a scissors and armbar combo, which he prolongs till Toney submits, in spite of the fact that Toney is clutching the bottom rope. While his pupil writhes on the mat, bitterly complaining that Wildcard isn't following the rules, the human wrecking ball strikes more poses in front of the now-unobstructed mirror.
Toney's complaints draw more punishment. A front suplex noisily slaps the challenger's back to the mat again, followed by a sharp elbow drop to the gut. Buck goes for a three-count, but Toney thrusts free. "All right. Got a little fight," Buck observes. "That's what I like to see: a big guy with some fight." Toney signals for a timeout. Request denied, however, to the tune of a stiff pummeling against two opposite turnbuckles. Buck is so tough that he then backs himself up to the corner ropes and invites Toney to blast away at the indie pro's hard tub belly. He withstands three heaving shoulder thrusts before snapping Rico into a standing head scissors, from which the challenger cannot escape until Buck voluntarily releases. Wildcard makes it clear that the only hope shots today will be by his leave.
Elaborate collages of crab holds, figure fours, and hammerlocks ensue, along with what amounts to assault and battery. Repeatedly Buck taunts his taller but less experienced opponent, at one point holding his hands behind his back, daring Toney to attack. Toney takes him up on it with a rousing offense that's nevertheless brought to a stop as Buck tears him a new asshole against (and entwined between) the ropes. What remains to be seen is whether Carter pushes his man over the brink, resulting in a sudden and disastrous turnaround. Or will the wrecking ball succeed in pulverizing the decreasingly jolly giant in green? The answer to that question is a sleeper finish, but who walks away, and who's left napping facedown in the ring?
