Kirk Donahue, heel: 5'10, 170 lbs Cole's back cracks as Kirk bends the legendary BGE star in an arching rear choke. Cassidy is chain-choked into unconsciousness, prostrate on the mat between Kirk's legs. The legend is laid low under the double bicep flex of the younger, newly-established heel. Kirk waves and wobbles dazedly on his knees before Cole's chain-wrapped knuckles. Kirk chuckles, gazing down at the grovelling veteran as he climbs his body back to his feet.
The World Turned Upside Down
The first thing we see is Kirk Donahue, villainous down to his Maleficent-purple trunks and handlebar mustache, wrapping a steel chain around his knuckles, then casting a cautious side glance towards the squared circle. This until-recently BGE wunderkind babyface, now strangely changed, climbs into the ring to face off against Cole Cassidy, who suspects nothing. One of BG East's most talented old school heels, Cole cheerily brags to Kirk that he, like everybody else who has ever faced Cassidy on the mat or in the ring, will have plenty to talk about after Cole is finished with him. Holding his reinforced fist behind him, Kirk replies, drily, "You won't be talking much when I'm through with you." Kirk has darkened after being part of BG East's 'new school' of recent ring superstars; no longer is he willing to be the victim. The two circle each other. Kirk disingenuously offers his hand (his LEFT hand) for a sportsmanlike handshake. Cole takes the hand, and Kirk immediately thrusts the steel links to the man's midsection, dropping him to the canvas, writhing.
Donahue follows up by driving his steel-plated knuckles into Cassidy's ribs, even while the man is down on the mat, helpless. Not once, but three times he assaults him with the foreign object. Then he unravels the chain and whips it across Cole's lower back. "How's it feel, Cole Cassidy, to be between the ropes with THE Kirk Donahue?" Kirk mocks Cole's swaggering boasts of minutes earlier. He casts the chain aside and continues to berate the fallen legend, saying, "You may think you're 'above excellent,' but I don't think you're smarter or more intelligent than Kirk Donahue." Then he drives the heel of his boot to Cassidy's lower back.
Both of these athletes are in tiptop shape for this faceoff. We've never seen Kirk with this much strut in his walk and this much bark in his voice. He's smooth as a snake and, as the bad guy for once, so sexy it hurts. Cole has been thrilling BGE fans for years. He's still built like a Roman god. Even broken, face down on the mat, he impresses. He grabs the bottom rope to force a break in the attacks. With the oily sincerity of an experienced heel, Donahue takes a few steps back, only to rush in and drive his boot into the fallen titan again.
For fourteen minutes, Donahue holds uninterrupted sway over Cassidy. We see a side of the man we have not seen so darkly pronounced as it is here. He is relentless and cruel. Then, at last, Cassidy turns on Donahue ... but, wait, is this just a hope spot to tease us into a sense of familiarity? Or will it be the match's defining moment? Cole strikes back and strikes with ferocity. In Cole, we see a cruelty that Kirk cannot hold a candle to. Cassidy tears into the upstart, laying waste to the smug self-assuredness of before, temporarily, at least. What is lasting is Donahue's humiliation, familiar ground for him, you might say, but so much more wretched after he has abandoned his integrity and honor. In the end, both of these men will have experienced a radical change in image and will have been thrust into radically new roles at BG East. In the end, at the very end, only one of these men gets to walk out of the ring on his own two feet.
This match is for everybody who thought he would never have cause to feel sorry for Cole Cassidy. Cole has beaten up more BGE hopefuls than there are links in Donahue's steel chain. There are grown men, big sturdy men, who have refused to step on a mat against Cassidy. The man has a reputation, well earned, for being a cold and merciless destroyer of wrestlers. This match is also for everybody who thought Kirk Donahue would never be more than the quiet and withdrawn jobber-boy we all liked feeling sorry for, even while we watched him shiver in pain, feeling superior. Be that as it may, we have seen clear signs of change in Kirk's character over the past year, though none so startling as this. Is this the start of a new era at BG East? Time alone will tell.
Even with a weapon, Kirk is ill-prepared for Cassidy's unexpected low blow.

Trapped in the corner, Kirk suffers between Cole's thighs in a turnbuckle-assisted headscissors.
Cole Cassidy: 5'8, 166 lbs Kirk rides the back of the solid-muscled veteran with a chain wrapped around his throat. Cole switches back to the driver's seat with a back-bending stomp to Kirk's lower back. Donahue uses his wrist tape to strangle Cassidy in a back-bending choke hold. Kissing the metal links wrapped around his knuckles, Cassidy sets Kirk up for a heartpunch. Flattened and trapped in the corner, Kirk is brutally boot-choked by a revived, dominant Cassidy.
