"Pain Turns Me On"
In Pros in Private 14, these two incredible indie talents, Ace Aarons and Kirk Donahue, turn out a nuanced but classically-structured ring battle that clearly shows their experience as pros familiar with the ins and outs of capturing their indie fans' imaginations - and wreaking havoc in the squared circle. Ace is a sly trickster and a heel through and through, sadistically relishing the agonies he subjects his opponents to, at one point declaring, "Pain turns me on!" In gear of shocking pink, with the words "Macho Man" decaled across his butt, Ace has become one of the most flamboyantly perverse villains on the BG East roster. Kirk, in baby blue, has played both sides of the babyface-heel divide, but here he is the definitive jobber - a naive, well-intentioned, and probably ill-fated local hero, who knows the ropes as a well-trained athlete, but is painfully innocent of others' bad intentions.
"Look at yourself in the mirror," Ace orders a dazed and slack-jawed Kirk at one point, hanging him on the ropes like a wet quilt and pointing his face towards the ringside mirror. "You know what I see? I see a pathetic little fucking boy trying to play in a man's world." For Ace, a "man's world" is naturally unjust, a dog-eat-dog landscape fit only for the predators who know how to grab what they want, feeling no compunction for those they trample upon in the struggle to be top dog. Ace is not just a man who follows no ethical code; he practices wrongdoing for its own sake. No doubt he would be a villain even if villainy brought no rewards. The man likes being bad. He luxuriates in nastiness, and as he readily confesses, he enjoys making others suffer. And in private, he can get away with even more!
Despite some recent detours into deviltry, Kirk has the face of an angel and, in this match at least, a code of ethics. From the start he treats his opponent with respect, even deference. When miffed, he finally slaps the baseball cap off Ace's head, as if that really is enough to move the heel to forsake his evil ways. Ten minutes into the match, Kirk corners Aarons, a clean victory appears to be within his reach. Aarons kneels, offering his hand in a gesture of sportsmanlike respect. Kirk reciprocates. Ace grabs the hand and punches Kirk in the mouth. Just seven minutes later, Ace plays him for a sucker again. Having choked and battered the babyface, Aarons opens his arms wide and invites him in for a friendly hug. Keep in mind that by this point, Ace has throttled Kirk five times over, yet Kirk walks into the embrace, only to get trapped in a chest-to-chest bearhug.
At one point in the match, Ace is beating the shit out of Kirk against the turnbuckle. "Say my name," he orders. Kirk bitterly replies, "Fuck you." Ace chuckles: "Okay. You're just asking for more. And I like it. I like it. You're actually kinda turning me on." But maybe there's a "last straw." Kirk certainly knows how to put up a strong fight, in the recent past he has beaten bigger adversaries than Ace, and in this match he has been pushed to his limits more than once. At what point does the proverbial worm turn? Will Ace Aarons get his comeuppance at last? Can Kirk bring himself to throw away the rule book and fight fire with fire? Or will Ace get the last laugh?
