Getting Whittled Down to Size
Fall Two starts with Cosenti fired up for an easy pass from the surprisingly humiliated Calder. A first-fall victory has been the downfall of many an overconfident contestant in the history of catch wrestling, and such is the case here. Flush with victory and convinced that he can best the pugnacious Calder again, having done it once, puts Cosenti in the vulnerable position of taking too much for granted and letting down his guard, as well as lightening up on his attack. Cosenti charges his stunned opponent, fully confident that what he has managed to do once with relative ease can just as readily be done twice.
But Calder wants nothing more than to see how his thick hard thighs fit on Tony's waist, and he finds out the fit is pretty good - and awfully tight! Just look at those tree trunks! Once those muscles are clamped on, there is virtually no escape. Calder's hamstrings bring Cosenti close to tears before a submission closes the round. "You liked that, didn't you?" Clay coos as he brandishes his beefy biceps lovingly. And then, as he did at the start of the first fall, he dives in to the not-yet-recuperated Cosenti before the sound of the bell. One thing we find out in this fight, curiously circular ...or spiraling ...in its scenario, is that these two humpy knuckleheads learn absolutely nothing from history!
When Tony once again bounces back, Clay takes the non-stop spanking Cosenti gives him like it's a totally unexpected surprise. When Clay squeaks out yet another submission, Tony doesnâ??t skip a beat before turning back to the mirror. Each man's fate seems predetermined by character. They both seem bound to habit and instinct, unable to break the patterns of behavior that cause them to repeat the same mistakes and receive the same outcomes. Evenly matched, within an inch and a dozen pounds of each other, equally driven by the predictable fallout of their vanity and opportunism, the two wrestlers follow a chain reaction to a climax that seems utterly a matter of fate and fortune's wheel.
Again Tony takes a successful round as proof of his own invincibility, and again Clay's guile and raw power overtake Tony's tendency to show off. The final fall will go not so much to the man bringing the best fight to the ring, but to the one who can break the behavioral habits that keep him (and his opponent) in a vicious cycle till the last bell.
