Partner or Prey? Audition Gone Wild
Charlie Panther has been prowling around BG East for more than a decade, but judging by the man warming up in bright coral trunks, those years haven't slowed the Big Cat down. Looking thicker, more proportionate, and perhaps better than we've ever seen him, Charlie claims he's been away improving himself. His latest ambition? Becoming Chase Addams' new tag team partner. Chase concedes that Panther has undergone quite a transformation, joking that somebody has been saying his prayers and taking his vitamins. Charlie has even painted his nails in apparent tribute to Chase's more flamboyant style, but unfortunately, Chase notices they're chipped.
That's only the beginning of Charlie's problems. Chase knows Panther's work but considers his rather uneven record an obstacle. "You're more of a jobber," he explains. Charlie insists that's the old Panther and that now he's "a completely different package." Chase can't resist inspecting the merchandise, slowly tracing a finger between Charlie's beefed-up pecs, down his abs, and finally testing the tightly packed front of those trunks. He likes what he sees enough to grant Charlie an audition.
Charlie takes the invitation seriously. A test of strength leads into a competitive chain of counters, reversals, bodyscissors, arm work, and a Boston crab, with Chase discovering that Charlie hasn't spent his absence merely building muscle. "I've been learning submissions too," Panther boasts. Crotch-to-face pins add playful humiliation to the increasingly physical examination, but Charlie isn't here just to impress his prospective partner. He's determined to prove he belongs beside him, kicking ass as a hot team.
Soon the audition becomes a true fight. Forearms lead to kicks, kicks lead to a piledriver, and both men dish out plenty of punishment in the corners. Charlie's determination to prove himself becomes almost obsessive. "I'm going to be your partner! I'm going to do whatever it takes!" he shouts while hammering away, before stretching the submission specialist in a vicious standing hold.
A pair of unexpected pins sends the match somewhere darker. A prolonged low blow announces that the audition period is over. A single-leg Boston crab and punishing figure-four attack the legs before an increasingly nasty parade of submissions twists one sweating body into agony. Eventually, a sleeper threatens to extinguish the fight altogether. Neither man seems willing to accept anything that could leave his superiority in doubt, perhaps to be the Alpha of the team?
Chase and Charlie expected an audition, but somewhere between the surprise falls, bruised egos, and escalating punishment, the roles of applicant and judge become considerably less clear. By the time another three-count finally settles matters, somebody has made his decision about this proposed partnership, but after a ring 'audition' this heated, whether these two are better suited as partners or forever opponents is anybody's guess!
