We have never seen Cole Cassidy look anything less than daunting - his rugged features and cool, hard stare would be equally at home among the bleak realism of a Sergio Leone western or the nightmare shadows of Frank Miller's Sin City. As a wrestler, he can snake his limbs around another man, find his weak spot, that patch of softness that is vulnerable to attack, setting the man's whole body on electric pins, and thus quietly extricate the last ounce of his opponent's self-confidence. To be sure, we can imagine him doing all of this with a toothpick pinched nonchalantly between his thin lips - and his heart rate never rising past 80 beats per minute. This man is a machine on the mat and in the ring. A machine that, at full throttle, has been known to reduce bigger men than you or me to pulp.
That said, Cole's opponent, Damon Clark, is no rookie. He's been around, and he's faced some hard customers here at BG East. Despite an uninspired win record, he has built a name for himself here at BG East - and on the underground wrestling circuit where he's both very popular and more successful. He's been known to prod his opponent to fury with a word or even a look, getting under his skin, in fights that are as psychological as they are physical. He does this, in part, by using his sharp tongue, all the sharper when he's cornered, and, in part, by taking on impossible levels of punishment and not breaking.
Wrestlers have their gear preferences, sure. We at BG East have catholic tastes - spandex, velvet, cotton, rubber - singlet, trunks, briefs, jocks, thongs - but there's always been a soft spot in our hearts for two guys wrestling shirtless in blue denim jeans. Who knows where and when jeans came to be called a "second skin," but nobody who's worn them can deny that that is exactly what they are. The sturdy fabric takes on the contours of a man's muscles and takes in his body heat. You can almost feel a man's pulse through the threads. Despite the sturdiness of the fabric, jeans can feel closer to naked than anything other than, well, naked. And there's no denying the historical link to all things tough, butch and ultra masculine in the way they look and feel. Jeans resonate with men in a variety of powerful ways. And it provides a strong subtext here.
Still - and we'll spare you the spoilers - when the first fall ends with a sudden, unexpected and totally jaw-dropping sleeperhold, the victor takes underlines his victory by taking his prize: peeling the loser down to his threadbare, bulging skivvies. It's a symbolic act of emasculation. It's a small act of ritual humiliation that gets answered as soon as the stripped guy comes to - and instantly decks the guy who stripped him.
