Big, Black, Blond, and Brutal, or, Singing Like A Soprano!
Before the match, Charlie Panther looks none too impressed as he watches Jonny Firestorm prepare in the ring, a series of amateur wrestling warm-up moves that showcase Jonny's speed, flexibility, and lithe muscle. Jonny is undaunted by his opponent's size and ring experience, By this point in his career, Jonny already knew he has what it takes to mix it up in the squared circle against just about anybody. Back then, not too many rookies would have called night-prowler Charlie "bitch," but Jonny's eagerness to show he could match Charlie's arrogance got the best of him no doubt, a show of impudence that leads Charlie to threaten to shove his size 13.5s up Jonny's butt.
Panther-versus-Firestorm starts out as a by-the-book exhibition match, but predictably (only in hindsight, perhaps) egos and fiery tempers soon snuff out any sign of sportsmanship, and we've got a slug-it-out brawl on our hands. Standard side headlocks lead to high kicks, which capitalize on Charlie's height advantage, but when Jonny proves he can keep pace with Charlie hold for textbook hold and blow for legal blow, Charlie only does what a big ambitious brute has got to do and aims for the low blow. Jonny curls up like a hedgehog, and Charlie gloats, "You'll be singing soprano in no time."
Jonny complains that cheap shots to the groin require no wrestling skill whatsoever, a pretty ironic declaration, we think, in light of subsequent history. He retaliates with a rear naked choke that nearly finishes Charlie, who grabs hair and claws skin in an attempt to escape. Charlie's uppercuts and rabbit punches pound Jonny flat to the mat, again and again. Let's say this once: nobody but nobody takes a punch or clothesline like Jonny!
And nobody does "tit for tat" better than Jonny either. He torpedoes Charlie through the ropes to the sofa, fists flying, but then Charlie and the hard ringside floor teach Jonny the physics of wrestling: that height, mass, density, and gravity matter. Contemptuously calling Jonny "Firefly," Charlie kicks him back into the ring and climbs in after to finish the job, but this fight is far from over yet, and the outcome of this match remains a total mystery till one of these men lies sprawled and unconscious on the mat! Classic!
