Nobody Knows You Like Your Tag Team Partner Knows You
Donnie Drake likes what he sees in the mirror. (And seriously, with that face and that smile and that butt, who wouldn't?) To say he has a following would be a laughable understatement. He's handsome. He's hot. And his star has been on the rise in the world of professional wrestling, especially since his co-starring role on a certain wrestling reality show, which he damn nearly won! His ego has grown as outrageously as his fan base, and former friends have noticed that Donnie won't take their calls anymore. Now that Donnie is a self-appointed "superstar" of wrestling, his former tag team partner, the cute tall, lanky, effervescent, boy-next door Shannon Embry, can't get the time of day from him.
Donnie may feel that he's outgrown small fries like Shannon, but Shannon knows Donnie like only a tag team partner can know another wrestler. Shannon had front row seats to every awkward rookie mistake that "the superstar" made early in his career. He saved Donnie's bacon in more tag matches than he can count, complimenting Donnie's bulldozer ego and withering trash talk with Shannon's lightening speed and crippling submission holds - as well as his willingness to take one (and then some!) for the team. Shannon was always perceived as the weak link by opposing heel tag teams and subsequently was the target of their combined and often brutal attention - about which Donnie D too frequently displayed an eyebrow raising ambivalence. Partnering night after night on the indy pro circuit teaches you a lot about the man upon whom you depend to have your back. When The Boss suggested that these estranged tag team partners meet again in the ring, Shannon smiled and said, "Anytime. Anywhere." Donnie asked, "Shannon who?" Uh huh.
When Donnie climbs into the ring, Shannon is flexing his long hot lean body. His baby blue trunks seem the perfect complement to his curly blond locks. "You honestly think you can compete with a man like me?" Double D asks. Donnie is about 40 pounds heavier than his wiry opponent and by virtue of his national celebrity, infinitely more confident. The superstar begins to show off his muscles, demonstrating for Shannon what "a real man" looks like. Turning his back on his opponent, Donnie never sees it coming when, flat-footed, Shannon leaps straight up and drop kicks his former partner squarely between the shoulder blades. The superstar flies across the ring and lands in a heap, stunned, shaking his head. "Not bad for a little boy," Donnie has to admit, climbing cautiously to his feet. He may want to pretend he doesn't remember his former friend's name, but Shannon is more than happy to remind him that it's always dangerous to turn your back on your opponent!
