The Slow and Agonizing Demolition of Sweet Shannon Embry
Few sights are more inspiring than the view of Caleb's metallic trunks riding up on his firm, round butt cheeks. The prominent bulge of his pouch stretching the front of those trunks is one of those rare sights, giving his honey-tanned glutes a good run for their money. No matter how you slice it, boys, you cannot deny that Caleb is as fit as a butcher's dog. Killer good looks (with deliberate emphasis on "killer"), combined with the ice in his veins and incredible ring savvy, are key to the Canadian heel's style. The assurance with which he dismantles even a strong and fast opponent like Shannon Embry testifies to the fact that he's done this sort of thing to other wrestlers thousands of times before.
Shannon starts the match aiming high, going for Caleb's neck. But an ambitious offense isn't worth much in the ring with Brand unless you've got a surefire defense against the man's vicious and relentless assaults. By far, Caleb is the better strategist. By going for his man's arms and legs first, he ensures that Shannon is going nowhere later. Once there is hardly any possibility of escape, having reduced the victim's legs to throbbing paralysis, Caleb progresses to even nastier assaults on the rest of the man's body. You have to admire the way Embry withstands the full force of Caleb's violence and still gamely comes back at him, intent on giving the burly blond tit for tat. But then Caleb Brand is a wrestling god, by any measure -- a malevolent wrestling god, for sure -- and long, lean Shannon Embry has got to face the fact that there's just no combating a force of nature.
Caleb's deadpan taunts are a hallmark of this match. His gift for understatement accentuates the economy of his aggression. Early in the bout, when Shannon pulls a fast and effective reversal, chicken-winging Caleb's arm behind his back, Brand responds in even and unhurried tones, "Now you're startin' to get me a little mad." It's that "little" that tears us up. After thoroughly disabling Embry a while later, with Embry's body still writhing on the canvas, the heel calls out, "Don't be a baby!" It's almost as if he holds it against Embry for denying him the pleasure of doing him even further damage. "You can do it," he coos with sneering "encouragement," though what Caleb clearly most desires is a playmate to absorb the full force of his tireless ferocity. That Embry is the man who most ably plays this role is what makes this fight so riveting...but then, poor Shannon...ouch!
