Better Than He Knows Himself
At this point in his career, Donnie is absolutely convinced that he deserves to win, particularly over some indy pro lightweight whose name he refuses to remember. When it quickly becomes clear that Shannon's speed and poise are every bit a match for the superstar, Donnie does what Donnie does best: he takes the nearest short-cut and rakes Shannon across the eyes. But Shannon knows Donnie's dirty tricks better than just about anybody. He takes everything that Donnie dishes out and comes back more determined than ever to take him down a couple of pegs - and then stick him for the 3 count!
Shannon makes Donnie work up a bright sheen of sweat all over his tanned, toned body. Twisting free like a rubber band, he reverses a double arm bar, causing Donnie to flee to the ropes. "Come on, break it!" Donnie pleads. "Be a good sport!" He knows full well that Shannon can't help but be a good sport. It's in his DNA. When Donnie extends his hand to thank him for the display of sportsmanship, Shannon takes an elbow to the throat. Just a reminder that when you climb into the ring with Donnie Drake, rules are for chumps.
The wrestling is incredibly fast and evenly matched. Shannon is the first to submit to a suspended surfboard. "You really honestly thought you could take me!?" Donnie crows, admiring himself in the mirror. "Time for a little more punishment." But Shannon eventually exploits Donnie's biggest weakness: his overconfidence. He stuns him with a brain rattling neckbreaker that floors the hurting heel. Shannon then follows up with an agonizing back-bender boston crab that finally makes the superstar scream out a humbling submission.
With falls even at one apiece, both wrestlers are damaged and desperate. The final blazing flurry is marked by raw tenacity and buckets of sweat. Near pinfalls teeter both battered men on the edge of losing the best of three. Of course, Donnie thinks this is all sewn up a half a dozen different times, but Shannon proves over and over he's made of tougher stuff than Donnie will ever give him credit for. Who comes out on top? The highflying, high quality, high impact professional wrestling will keep you in suspense. Don't count out either of these top-notch BG East warriors until one former tag team partner screams out an astonished, grudging and brutal final fall submission.
