They Say Breaking Up Is Hard to Do...
Sometimes the only way to shut a guy up is to beat him fair and square. That's the lesson we can take home from this match. Shayn and Nik were long-time tag team partners. For years they worked hand in glove, finishing each other's sentences, thinking like two halves of the same vicious and pugnacious brain. They had what we civilians call chemistry; they had what those in the know in the pro wrestling business call a 'marriage'. But this marriage is on the skids. After losing big a year ago, in a match against a couple of youngsters, the two men have bitterly blamed the other for the loss. Knox, in particular, has loudly criticized Layn's ring conduct, griping to anybody with ten seconds to spare that if it weren't for Layn the team's record would still be spotless today. It's been a bone of contention for the old friends, now ex-friends, and ultimately it is one that could be settled only by pulling the two battlers back into the ring to settle the score once and for all.
It's Layn who suggests that the talking stop and the fighting begin. The only way these two brutes can reach resolution is through combat. Let fists and body slams determine what is what. To hell with talking things out. The two lock up, and Knox takes a grim satisfaction in putting the hurt on his old partner, based on the old (perhaps the oldest in history) conviction that the best medicine for resentment is cold-blooded retribution. What made them so effective as teammates, their ability to anticipate each other's every move, only makes them deadly dangerous adversaries in the squared circle.
As a result of their years of synchronized tandem strategizing, the turnabouts happen lightning fast. No sooner does one wrestler dominate the other than the positions reverse, and the top becomes the bottom, and the bottom, the top. The result is the kind of grunting-and-groaning standoff that most other promotions have abandoned for the sake of speed, fancy-footed aerial (and mostly non-sensical) acrobatics. But nothing satisfies quite as deeply as the long slow painful hold, pinning your opponent's head to the mat with your knee while you try to wrench his arm loose at its socket, the moans issuing from deep inside the body and your adversary shuddering up against you as you ratchet up the hurt. If you have doubts about the erotic charge that comes from hearing two men moan in agony, punctuated with the slap of flesh on flesh, this match will settle the matter for you. Without a doubt, the soundtrack to a fight like this is almost as potent as the visuals.
