Balls to the Wall
Unable to sustain a clear lead in a purely technical contest, Nick does what heels often do - resort to short cuts! He kicks Alexi in the ribs bringing the handsome hunk face down to the mat. Once his opponent is vulnerable, Nick is in no hurry to let him back up! He proceeds to beat the man and wear him down, hoping to make short work of him. But Adamov is too smart for that. Dodging an elbow drop, Alexi gets hold of Nick's right arm and gives it a succession of swift, neat jerks, all but tearing it out of its socket, and then shows Nick what the soles of his bright white boots feel like. If Naughton likes the taste of his own medicine, he sure doesn't show it, but, true to form, he still wangles a win in Fall 1, not so much through superior ring skills as through total disregard for the rules.
Fall 2 brings us something seldom seen in a pro match: five minutes of real freestyle wrestling. It's a revelation - because both men are remarkably adept at straight-on mat grappling - a skill not all pro guys bring to the ring. It's almost as if, without saying a word, the two men decided to let their freestyle wrestling chops determine the outcome of this fall. They work up a hard sweat as their powerful bodies knit together, limbs coiling firmly around each other's body, their writhing, rolling physiques tumbling over each other. So long as the contest remains pure by-the-rules wrestling, Alexi handily dominates the heel.
But in catch-as-catch-can wrestling, ego often trumps rules and sportsmanship, and sensing there's no other way to come out on top, Nick resorts to fists and boots, breaking the unspoken pact in a bid for an easy and unequivocal 2-0 victory. Obviously, Alexi entered the ring expecting no favors from a heel like Nick, renowned for his viciousness and dirty tricks. He knew all along that "nice guys" are few and far between in BGE's cutthroat world, and having tried to play it clean and scientific for one and a half falls, Alexi considers his options - let Nick call all the shots, thus giving the underhanded heel free reign to do as he pleases, or fight fire with fire. Happily, Alexi decides to cut loose on Nick, and the last half of this match measures up to BG East's usual high standards for gripping drama and brutal plot twists. The two men slug it out, balls to the wall, in a breathtaking finish. Adamov-v-Naughton is going to be one match for the history books, no doubt one we'll still be talking about, years from now. Hot, sweaty and VERY sexy!
