Lesson #2 - Yeah, Boy! You're Still A Rookie!
While not exactly a newbie, Rudolfo Dias is still officially a rookie, this being only his second mat outing for BG East. He fought Cameron Matthews on this very same mat in Mat Hunks 10, acquitting himself stunningly, to say the least. It was one of those rare debuts that can confer star status almost immediately. Ever eager to put what at first glance may look like beginner's luck to the stiffest imaginable test, the head honchos at BG East booked handsome Rudolfo against the toughest MMA fighter we know, Eli Black. Here and elsewhere Eli has a long line of mat, ring, and cage work behind him, including BGE Fan Poll honors for two of his mat matches, first against Jake Jenkins (2012) and then, you guessed it, Cameron (2013). Putting these two hard boys with matching sets of gorgeous abs against each other, we expected fireworks, and, gosh darn it, we got fireworks!
We see Rudolfo first, punching and high-kicking the space in front of him. Then we see Eli, off to one side, also in training gloves. Seemingly unimpressed with the new guy, Eli offers himself up as a sparring partner, noting that "air doesn't hit back." Focused on his warmup, Dias doesn't give him a second look until Eli adds that it "seems like air's all that's going through your head." Rudolfo's head cocks in Eli's direction. The only thing Eli Black is better at than pushing an opponent's buttons is firing knuckles, knees, heels, and elbows into an opponent's body. Buttons pushed, Rudolfo accepts Eli's invitation to spar. Black points out the rookie's bad habit of lowering his hands when kicking. Dias graciously accepts the pointer, adding, "What else you got for me?" "Lesson Two will come shortly," says Eli.
Lesson #2 must be Never Underestimate Your Opponent because Rudolfo Dias cranks a tap-out from Eli within five minutes, using a face-numbing side headlock. Heady with victory, the rookie is self-confident, even a bit cocky as he says, "Just learning, bro." Nine more minutes of sparring passes, neither man submitting the other. Sweat shines both bodies after a vigorous and sportsmanlike struggle. Black suggests they pull off the training gloves and "take it to the ground," where the two can grapple as hard and mean as they like. With apparent sincerity, Eli congratulates Rudolfo for his good work, but the last glove has not hit the floor before the shit talk resumes. Now it's Dias's turn to push Black's buttons, seemingly intent on raising Black's hackles for as good a fight as he can get out of the guy.
Whether or not that's really what Rudolfo wanted, that's what he gets. A minute later, he's tapping under the killing stress of Eli's arm bar. Then, no less quickly, he's making Eli tap with a neck breaker, using one hand only or, more accurately, one hand and a knee pressed to Eli's chest. Given Eli's short fuse and Rudolfo's love of goading an opponent into a frenzy, things are set to explode as the 32-minute match enters its final ten minutes. Nobody expected this fight to be this even. Whatever anybody may predict before seeing the match, all bets are off in its final stretch. The give and take intensifies as each man pushes the other closer and closer to his breaking point. "Keep it coming," Eli insists as both competitors feel the drag of fatigue and the trauma of hard fighting. The only thing we'll promise you is that this match does not end in a DQ or lame-ass tie. This match ends with agony and glory, one man knocked clean the fuck out and the winner hovering over him, gasping for air as he declares, "I'm the best!"
