You may recognize Mason Broder from video downloads of his wrestling matches in Europe and America. In Spain, he fights wrestlers from all over. But like so many all over the world, he set his sights on BG East, whose reputation for producing top-notch combat entertainment is second to none. His knowledge of English is limited, but wrestling is its own kind of language and culture. Of course, being booked against BGE's Jonny Firestorm might require a short Spanish-English phrase book of useful terms like "I submit," "I quit," and "Please don't kill me." Before this highly anticipated match, Mason looks confident, but not cocky. Slim, soft-spoken, incredibly handsome, the Spaniard has flown 4,692 miles to stand face to face with our Jonny in the BGE ring in a form-fitting singlet that glows with taught muscles. If you're one of Mason's fans, keep your fingers crossed.
As usual, Jonny is nonchalant and chatty. He's careful to make Mason understand what exactly he's stepping into, though he's eager to take the guy on in the squared circle. No holds barred grappling is the American version of a bullfight. Jonny may be the big bull, but this bull isn't so easy to take down. Warming up before the match, Mason's red singlet shows two bears on their hind legs, poised to wrestle each other. Bears are revered symbols of Spanish culture, especially in Madrid, going back at least as far as the thirteenth century, when they were admired for both their fighting spirit and their easygoingness, qualities many of today's Spaniards see in themselves as well. Perhaps there's a Jonny tie-in, too.
"I'm not afraid of you" are not words that should be spoken to Jonny Firestorm before a match against Jonny Firestorm, but such is Mason's confidence as he limbers up for this fight, with Johnny standing at the edge of the ring, looking on. Jonny replies to Mason's bold announcement, saying, "There's a sucker born every minute." Mason has no response, possibly unfamiliar with the quote. "Have you seen this?" Mason strikes a double biceps pose as Jonny climbs into the ring. Jonny is polite, seemingly interested, but he's seen way bigger biceps than Mason's and not batted an eye. Obviously a fighter, obviously easygoing: Jonny hunkers down to wrestle his new friend from abroad. Poor Mason has no idea what he's in for.
Jonny targets Mason's left leg and takes him face down to the mat in half a second. Almost as quickly, Jonny pins Mason's shoulders to the mat, but this is a no-holds-barred match. We're left to wonder whether Mason knows that he has signed on to a suicide mission. Next, the two lock up collar and elbow, and Jonny lifts Mason into the air and SLAMS him to the mat, again pinning him to the mat, this time in a cradle. Next, Jonny pulls the legs out from under Mason, pro-style, once again announcing it as a pinfall. That's roughly three pins in one minute. It's pretty clear that Mason Broder did not read the fine print on his contract.
Broder does his best to score, but this is freakin' Jonny Firestorm he's in the ring with! Are we sure Broder even knows he's at BG East? No sooner does Mason appear to have locked up Jonny, Jonny either breaks loose or, more often, squashes him on the spot. Eight minutes into the match, Jonny strips Mason of his red singlet, thinking he will be leaving Broder in his "birthday suit," grumbling when he sees the red trunks his challenger wears under the singlet. Thus stripped, Mason displays a beautiful physique ... for a male fashion model. He's lean almost to the point of delicateness, but he is far from delicate or cowardly, as will be seen soon as he persists in taking and surviving everything Firestorm throws at him. He literally asked for it, and, boy, is he going to get it!
