"You like that? You get off on that?" Mason teases Sunny, while keeping a straight face or trying to. He refers to Sunny's red and white team football gear, including shoulder pads, which he wears to wrestle Mason out by the lake. "What is this? You just going to make me strip each piece off you?" Mason chuckles dismissively and swats his teammate across the face, not hard, just enough to piss him off. It works. Sunny leans in to lock up. Both lose balance and fall on the mat and roll, clutching each other. Sunny turns onto his stomach with Mason riding his back. "So, uh, this is embarrassing," Mason says, clinging to the guy, "you're going to have to remind me of your name now." "Fuck you," Sunny replies. "I don't think that's your name," says Mason, tightening his grip on Sunny's jawline. He complains that, as team captain, he can't remember the names of "every new recruit who fucks up."
There's a reason Mason Brooks is as famous for his snark as for his grappling skills. He is a strong and resourceful wrestler, to be sure; he also relies on psychology to push opponents to blind rage or mere distraction. As Sunny gasps for air, Mason is reminded of the 1993 movie Rudy, a drama about a small guy who aspires to play for Notre Dame. What has this movie to do with this match? Your guess is as good as ours. Fans love Mason for his dry and out-there sense of humor. His opponents, not so much. Mason squats on Sunny's shoulder and grips the right arm between his thighs and uses his free hand to tug Sunny's hair. In agony, Sunny taps out.
Sunny lies prone, moaning, while Mason removes Sunny's training shoes. DeLeon staggers to his feet, and Mason pelts him with the shoes. He then turns Sunny upside down and drops him â?? on his shoulders, fortunately, not his head. Mason then sits on his team mate's face and starts punching his stomach. He plies Sunny with every indignity he can think of in a plot to destroy his mental and physical well-being: a hazing of sorts! And Mason has a whole stack of indignities he can subject Sunny to. Mason's aggressions are unfocused and random. Psychologically stunned, Sunny does not and, indeed, cannot strike back at the team captain. When Sunny gets his bearings, Mason switches to a different set of attacks.
There is not a single part of Sunny's languishing body that escapes Mason's random blitzes. He attacks kneecaps, upper vertebrae, lower vertebrae, ankles, shoulders, nipples, crotch, and hair, in no order, always catching Sunny off-guard. But his favorite punishment is suffocation. He smothers Sunny with one of his socks, demanding that the rookie give him his name, first and last, despite having already reduced him to jelly. Repeatedly, he rests his crotch on Sunny's nose and mouth. He scolds Sunny for his lack of stick-to-itiveness, but he barely gives him room to breathe. As for Sunny, what can we say? Caught by surprise and repeatedly mocked, Sunny is utterly helpless against a team captain who is more experienced and inherently malicious. Tackled and humiliated, Sunny's brutal post-practice nightfall hazing will not be easy to forget.
