Grappling Fans Rejoice! Wrestling Daddy MMA Action
A siren wails in the distance as Doug Warren and Tony Vencini warm up for a mat match. We haven't seen either of these two veterans for some time, but it's BGE superstar Doug who puts his reputation on the line in this down and dirty, MMA style match. Both tough guys are in tiptop shape for this showdown. As their muscles stretch, their faces are expressionless. Each is in his own zone, preparing himself both mentally and physically for the imminent fight. The match begins as Doug and Tony slap hands and circle each other, crouching. Doug initiates, maneuvering to flip Tony on his back. As in mixed martial arts, pins don't matter here: what counts is a tap of submission as the pain becomes too great, or as one admits he may not escape the tight muscles of his opponent without passing out. In this muscle battle, it's skill as well as power that will determine the winner.
Doug succeeds in taking Tony down, but he takes him from behind, his legs bracketing Tony's waist. He almost hooks his arm around Tony's neck, but Tony pries it loose. The legs, though, are tenacious, and ultimately Warren gets the body lock on Vencini he wanted. Our camera swoops in to capture Tony's agony and his gasps for air. Tony will not tap out. Doug shifts position to an armlock. With tremendous effort, Tony pulls free of his opponent's arms and legs. But not a minute passes before Warren is back on top.
This is real grappling, an authentic competition. Both men are built thick and solid, as durable as Egyptian pylons. Hair shaved close to the pate, they reject the stylings and affectations of pretty-boy wrestler performers. Warren has always meant business, even as he enjoys toying with his opponents. He asks Vencini if he is ready to submit. "Is this all you got?" Tony shouts back to echoes. Brave words, considering the guy is obviously in agony. Doug cranks further, nearly ripping the big man's arm off. Then and only then does Tony submit. Still in one piece, Tony gets up on his feet, still panting and waving his arms as if to shake off the pain. In mere seconds, he is ready to brawl some more.
The match goes for six more falls. In the second, Tony is set to redeem himself, and he takes Doug down fast, and clamps down hard on Warren. For several long seconds both men are immobilized, so intensely knotted are their muscular bodies. Then Warren thrusts, loosening Vencini's grip on him. However, Tony regains control a half-second later. The younger wrestler is determined to win this round, and he has a firm grasp on Warren's flushed head. Doug braces both hands against Tony's cheekbone, distorting his challenger's face. You can practically smell the aggression in the air. Doug breaks loose and starts to roll up on his knees, but in a flash, Tony seizes him and slams him back to the mat. He rolls Doug into an ultra-tight cradle. Warren groans and hollers as Tony ramps up the pressure, forcing a submission.
At this point, the match is not even a third over, and the action does not let up for even half a minute. Experience versus youth, indefatigable commitment to fighting, unique holds with the noble beauty of flushed and super-sweaty skin: however you want to frame it, this is a truly great match, destined to be remembered as one of BG East's finest. Irresistibly sucking you into the struggle, it takes little imagination to put yourself into either man's position. Fans of Doug or Tony or both will feel compelled to watch this battle more than once: a surefire classic and a keeper!
