Lightly Seasoned
Rookies Greg Garrett and Pete Owens face each other in this match, each with two BG East matches behind them. Though far from being veterans, the two are "lightly seasoned" fighters, nevertheless. Pete who already has a reputation as something of a prick and clearly enjoys inflicting pain on his opponents, is in full possession of himself as reflected in the ringside mirror. He flexes and twists, just to catch another glimpse of his own heroic profile in the mirror, with a flat smooth stomach and a treasure trail you might want to follow just to see where it leads you! He knows he's good looking, in a deceptively boy-next-door fashion, grunting like he's lifting his weight in iron, but all he is doing is soaking in his reflection, committing every little detail to memory. "A work of God," he calls himself, and with false humility mutters, "Thank you, Lord," in a deep, self-satisfied drawl.
At that moment, Greg struts into the arena. He's already faced some tough competition here at BGE, having fought wily, no-nonsense pros like Dick Rick and Jonny Firestorm, both of whom put the eager novice through his paces. With characteristic Midwestern aplomb, though, Greg took his knocks and learned from them. He enters the ring in tight sexy star-spangled trunks, full of confidence that, having paid his dues, he's ready to prove himself against Owens, a man with roughly the same experience as he. "Got a job to do," he says. The "job," it turns out, to nobody's surprise, is to smack Pete all over the ring and wipe that condescending smirk off his face. It's a job journeyman wrestler Greg feels ready for, the training showing in his gait as he slips through the ropes, eyeing Owens like a butcher eyes a hanging slab of beef, with assured professional calm. Nothing personal.
But some guys think a fight ought to be "personal," not just a detached and scientific test of capabilities and strength, and Pete takes offense at Greg's easygoing manner. He demands respect he hasn't earned yet ...and, with a couple of fights behind him, he seems itchy for an archenemy, with all the personal and exciting animosity that comes with that role. Having apparently watched footage of Rick and Firestorm all but wiping the floor with Greg, Pete presumes he's on the same level as these two stars and lregards his opponent with contempt, just a floor mat to his inevitable triumph.
If Greg thinks Pete is too much a narcissist to pack much of a wallop, he obviously has another think coming. Owens is a grade-A heel-in-training, with lots of mouth and baditude and smarts enough to handle himself against Garrett in an all-out brawl. Owens jumps all over Garrett and takes a certain sadistic glee in stretching and banging up the earnest young wrestler's pale taut body. These guys are evenly matched, and if Owens wants to fight dirty - cornering Greg, pulling hair, raking his fingers across the eyes, choking him on the ring ropes - Greg is willing and able to get as down and dirty as Pete.
