Fall 1 ends with an agonizing suspended surfboard, so sculpturally beautiful it may bring a tear to your eye. In exquisite torment the victim gasps "I give!" from up on high. We have seen a lot, folks, but never have we seen two wrestlers quite so effectively put the edge on each other and raise themselves to new and unexpected heights of artistry and professionalism. Kid Karisma has never been more charismatic and expressive as he is here. Austin Cooper surprises us with his speed and agility - and a real taste for hurting and humiliating his opponent. The guy even has a little Ric Flair woo in him. Who knew? Neither has been any better than he is in this match. Here is one of the best-paced bouts we have seen in years. It's got high-leaping acrobatics and almost endless sweaty clenches in perfect measure. This is the shit, boys. The real deal.
"This isn't just all looks, man," Coop gloats, at one point when he's got Kid K right where he wants him. "There's a lot more going on," he says, pumping up a mondo glistening bicep, just to drive his point home. But those looks don't hurt, either. Both are in peak condition - but, yeah, there's a helluva lot more here than you get in a pinup in a glossy magazine. These guys are gunning for glory - and the price of glory at BG East is you got to make a mess of the other guy. Law of the jungle. Kid and Coop seem never to tire of cutting each other down to size. Close in height and weight, they are evenly matched in heart and dexterity, too. With a contest this close, the deciding factor has got to be durability - which one of these guys has the staying power to see this battle to the end?
To the doubters who think we may have rushed things in giving a newcomer like Cooper a Spotlight of his own - in a series that has celebrated the crowning achievements of men like Mitch, Donnie, Jonny and Leopard - we offer this match. Watch what Coop does in the ring against a showstopper like Karisma, and all doubt will be removed. And Kid K, too, is a revelation - moody, mean, merciless, and mesmerizing, even when it looks like the red-haired hothead is a goner - even then, the star appeal is unmistakable.
