Tough Teacher; Intemperate Tutor...
Fresh off a match in BACKYARD BRAWLS 6 against newly returned BG East veteran Christopher Bruce, Denny Cartier runs into another BGE icon, Mikey Vee at the BGE lakeside watering hole. Cartier sees Vee, with two stunning decades of combat experience under the BGE aegis, as a personal hero, maybe even a role model. He's at a loss for words. Vee sweet-talks the younger wrestler and offers, in an apparent show of good will, to teach the guy a few moves he's perfected over the years.
Vee has just found out that Cartier beat Bruce, Vee's BFF ... well, maybe not exactly "best friend," but certainly "peer." And because of generational pride or whatever, Vee decides he won't let the younger dude get away with it. A little history lesson now, guys: In MATMEN 6, Bruce handed Vee one of his few defeats, though Mikey's infamous selective memory keeps that loss suppressed. Mikey was brand new to the mat game then, a total wrestling rookie. Now he runs an MMA dojo! No wonder, then, that Vee is secretly sharpening his knife for the hide of the cocky youngster who's just beat the guy who once, long ago, beat Vee! It's a rite of passage for a veteran to put a rookie in his place!
In the mat room, Mikey still pulls his chipper, nonchalant act to relieve any doubts Cartier might have about stepping on the mat with a famously ferocious competitor like Vee. Just a warm-up, really, nothing serious. A little workout. Sparring. A how-to session on the art and science of submission wrestling. Sure. Vee doesn't know HOW to pull a punch, and his assault on Cartier is aggressive and punishing from the start, more sadistic than instructive. Vee pretends he's just sharing a little of his accumulated mat know-how with the eager student: "Just a taste," he says in a cajoling, patronizing tone, even after he delivers one of many incapacitating sleeper chokeholds.
Obviously awed by Vee's rep, stature and status as a BGEast icon - and willing, at first anyway, to put up with a little hurt just to be in Vee's presence, Denny Cartier tries his best against his hero and supposed new mentor, but this is one "tough teacher," bent, it would appear, on utterly destroying the newly victorious eager and earnest young wrestler.
