WARNING: Matched in physique and ring savvy and dead set on each other's total destruction, Jonny Firestorm and Paul Hudson together in the ring (in their dewy youth, no less) may cause certain viewers debilitating side effects such as dizziness, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, mood swings, extreme and sudden increases in libido, seizures, blackouts, electric shock sensations, also known as brain zaps, swelling and tightening of the genitals, and, in some extreme cases, violent outbursts. Consult a physician immediately if you experience any of these symptoms while watching the main event of BG East's Ring Wars 27. And holy sh*t, what a freaking incredible finale! Match of the year?
After a glowering staring contest from their respective corners, Jonny charges towards Paul a half-second before the bell sounds, body-slamming the blond facedown to the mat and firmly cinching his waist in a reverse bearhug. Paul wriggles free and reverses, but seconds later Jonny escapes and responds with an agonizing wristlock, adding stress to the joints with jolting counterclockwise twists. Both guys know how to give - and take - punishment.
Once again, Hudson breaks out of the hold and reverses. Firestorm swerves out and back in, body-slamming his opponent a second time and locking his left arm, one hand pressing forcefully down on the shoulder to exacerbate the discomfort. The point-counter-point pattern continues, each stretch lasting a little longer than the last, until Jonny wins the first fall by submission with a couple of egregiously nasty kicks and a traumatizing figure-four variation. But wait - as tempted as you may be - hold your.... horses!
For the next six minutes, the pattern resumes, following Firestorm's uncalled-for Pearl-Harboring of a still incapacitated Hudson. The turnabouts escalate in intensity and rage, climaxing when Paul spectacularly defeats Jonny in what is almost an exact mirror image of the assaults and punishments he has just endured. Payback, with interest!!
The match at this point could not be more even or more spellbinding. The tick-tock of give and take increasingly ruthless and heated, the wrestlers are almost mechanistically dispassionate about the harm they are causing each other, like two giant reptiles tearing into each other while, around them, Tokyo burns and crumbles to the ground.
Words cannot even begin to capture how frigging HOT all this is. The competitors are well built but hardly bodybuilders, more the precise opposite: body-levelers. On the small and light side, Paul and Jonny have made names for themselves humiliating big and meaty bruisers like Nick Naughton and Donnie Drake, as well as making table scraps out of opponents closer to them in build. The skill level here is gobsmackingly phenomenal.
Exactly the same weight, with only a couple of inches' difference in height, these are two bodies seemingly predestined to collide one on one. They have, in fact, faced off once before. In Tag Team Torture 9, Paul teamed up with Cameron Matthews to take on Jonny and Anthony Wayne. As great as that contest is, it pales compared to this one, where Jonny and Paul grind each other down without a break or a partner to depend on for help.
With twenty minutes remaining, Jonny and Paul punch, gouge, bludgeon, choke, stomp, stretch, squeeze, and twist each other untiringly. Along the way, we are treated to one of the most formidable sleeper holds ever caught on video and an out-of-ring brawl that should leave viewers with a weighty case of the blue balls, at which point you can hit pause and seek relief, provided you can tear your eyes away from the screen.
But save some juice for the finale: a series of skull-and-spine-jangling piledrivers ending in a full ten-count pin fall. These are two guys nobody else is better than, determined to settle whatever bad blood exists between them right now, once and for all. BG East at its best!
