Tall, handsome and amazingly ripped newcomer Diego Diaz came to us, begging for just twenty minutes in the ring with Austin Cooper. Austin's in the crosshairs of a dozen or more of our star performers, so why should we give Diego a crack at him in his very first BG East appearance? "Because," he told us, "it is my destiny to destroy him." Oh, yeah? Diego sat there in our Florida office, wearing a striped sleeveless shirt, his biceps rolling as he talked, almost as if he expected Austin to enter the room at any second and he wanted to be set to pounce. A bright smile flashed across his mouth, his white teeth gleaming. At first we couldn't decide whether determination drove the guy or he just had a screw loose. "I want to kick his American butt," he added, a slight accent coloring his vowels.
It's hard for us to remember exactly whose idea it was for Austin to wear red-white-and-blue trunks for this match. It might have been Austin's, eager to tweak Diego's ego and ready to don the role of "Captain America." It was definitely Austin's idea to warble "The Star-Spangled Banner" while he warmed up in the ring, his smooth-as-butter tan catching the key light as he feigned jabs at an invisible opponent. He had not heard of his imminent opponent until just the day before. "Sure," he told us gamely, when we conveyed Diego's challenge to him. "Bring it." He had shaken his head as he looked down at the 8x10 glossy full-body shot of Diego, shirtless in fighter pose. Something between a hiss and growl escaped Austin's lips. "I'll bust this crazy motherfucker up."
Austin has fought five matches since his BG East debut versus his old wrestling chum Jake Jenkins. Not long ago he had his own Wrestler Spotlight, a high point in any BGE wrestler's career. His win-loss record has been spotty, but his matches and his performances against Lucky Loko, Jonny Firestorm, Kid Karisma, Dick Rick, and Z-Man have been nothing short of spectacular, what many have dubbed "instant classics." Fans can't decide whether they like Austin better when he dominates his man or when the other guy beats the living crap out of him. A sizeable number of us like both, more or less equally. But there's no division regarding his appearance in each and every match - with unanimity everyone is impressed with his skill, his attitude and his physique. His match here against cocky Diego marks his first encounter with a totally unknown equation, and the results are explosive.
